In 2004 visited Uzès in the South of France and was mesmerised by the light, colour and texture of the place.
Inspired by bright awnings, parasols, weathered stone buildings, shuttered facades and crumbling masonry and ‘les publicités anciennes’ – huge, faded adverts painted onto the sides of buildings.
Tom says: Every angle of this town was an artist’s delight. With photos galore, I set about recreating what I’d experienced as soon as I returned. Tom Butler the artist was born here!”
Technique and style has evolved from general missed media early on to collage style which now dominates.
Alongside the collage layers, he uses acrylics, inks and pen and loves to incorporate element of text.
He loves being in the studio at the end of his Berkshire garden at every opportunity.
Recently he has particularly enjoyed observing London but also loves recreating scenes of Paris (where his wife is from), New York, Havana and of course Venice. He loves to travel and discover new places and relishes the prospect of doing this more and more as his paintings evolve.
He studied the work of Singer Sargent, Kandinsky and the 1930s poster artist and typographer, A.M Cassandre.
Recently inspired by contemporary artists such as Luke Martineau, Mike Bernard, Andrew Hood and more.
